The main components of a flatbed scanner include a light source, a photo sensitive chip fixed to a movable assembly and electronic control hardware. The scanner sends electrical signals generated by the photo sensor to the host computer, images are created by software running on the host computer.

When choosing scanners the most important specifications to consider are the resolution and color accuracy.

Sensor resolution is measured in dots per square inch (dpi), scan quality is directly proportional to sensor resolution. 600, 1200 and 2400 dpi are standard resolutions. 16,32 and 48 bit sensors are common and color accuracy is determined by bit depth. Compared to a 32 bit sensor a 48 bit sensor has a higher color accuracy. Photo scanners from Canon and other brands use 2400 dpi sensors for color accuracy.
